Antenatal Care

Antenatal care is provided in the practice. Patients who believe they are pregnant and have a positive pregnancy test should make an appointment with the midwife at the earliest opportunity.

Asthma Clinic

The Practice runs Asthma clinics. The aim of the Asthma clinics is to provide regular monitoring, education and support for patients with Asthma.

At the clinic:

Asthma symptoms are controlled and discussed
Education on Asthma and medication is give
Inhaler technique is assessed so that we can ensure the most appropriate device is selected for the individual
Peak Flow measurement is recorded
Home peak flow monitoring and home management plans discussed
Lifestyle advice given
Concerns relating to Asthma management are discussed.

Cervical Smear

Regular smear tests are advised between the age of 25 and 65 years. These are important because they detect early signs of disease when it can be easily treated. We, along with the Health Authority, operate a recall system. You will be reminded by letter of when your smear is due asking you to make an appointment at this surgery. Please inform the surgery if there are specific reasons for not including you in the recall and we will inform the Health Authority on your behalf.

Please telephone for an appointment in the Smear Clinic or if this is not convenient we can offer alternative appointments with the Practice Nurse in the daily Treatment Room sessions.


The Practice runs Diabetic clinics. All Diabetic patients are seen on a 6 monthly basis or more frequently if required. The clinics are run by our Nurse Practitioner Julie Hunt. The aim of the clinics is to provide education, support and monitoring of your condition and early detection and prevention of complications.

At the clinic:
Blood test results and Diabetic control are discussed
Blood pressure and weight are monitored
Dietary advice/lifestyle advice are given
Urine is tested
Feet are checked/foot care advice given
Home monitoring is discussed

Medical Examinations

HGV, Fitness Medicals, Insurance Medicals are performed at the surgery. Appointments are generally with the nurse followed by a doctor’s consultation and take between 20 and 30 minutes. Patients are requested to make appointments well in advance due to the length of time required.

Most of these medicals fall outside of the NHS and therefore a fee is charged to the patient. Patients will be advised at the time of booking the charge for your medical. Medicals are confirmed in writing and we request a minimal cancellation notice of 24 hours due to the length of time booked for these appointments. Failure to cancel or attend will result in a charge of 50% of the actual fee.

Minor Surgery

Certain minor surgical procedures are carried out by Dr Eaves at the practice premises. These include the removal of some small skin lesions.

Joint injections are also carried out by both Dr Eaves and Dr Thorpe in normal surgery appointments. If you think you require either of these services please make an appointment to see the doctor first.

NHS Health Checks

NHS Health Checks are open to those aged 40-74 who do not already have heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, diabetes or dementia. You can find out more on the NHS website.

Private Medical Services

he completing of private medical claim forms ie BUPA, ‘To Whom it May Concern’ letters etc are not included in the NHS Service and therefore are subject to a fee.

Travel Clinics

The surgery provides travel advice. Patients can discuss their travel destination with the Practice Nurse and she will be able to provide up to date information on any outbreaks of disease and vaccinations required for the area.

Well Baby and Infant Clinics

Consultation clinics are run by the Health Visitor at Empingham Surgery every Wednesday between 12.30pm and 2.30pm. There are also other Health Visitor clinics around Rutland. You will be invited to attend these clinics at specific times.
